Im using Ableton Live these days, it used to be Cubase VST5 for writing and Logic Pro for mixing down.
I still use Logic for mixdowns now and again, depending what sound im after (east end thug being an example)
I use Wavelab 4 for all audio editing.
Soundcard is a MOTU 828 << which I have to say I dont like that much, but cant afford a new one.
Hardware wise Im not using as much as I used to, main bit of kit being the Novation Supernova 2 synth. Although to be honest these days I tend to record it and then use the samples.
I still have an Ivory 5021 compressor and an Aphex exciter, but other than that im not really using anything else. The odd guitar pedal here n there, normally Boss ones.

My current speakers are a pair of shitty Alesis monitor ones, which are ok for the room Im set up in, but compared to my old scanspeaks they dont give me the same clarity. But the scanspeaks are way too big for my room now, one of the pitfalls to moving your studio home. The other not having the daily access to all the various hardware that comes through the door.

Back to the software I tend to stick with plugins I like and not use much else, personal favourites though are... in no particular order
PSP Vintagewarmer
Audio Damage Crush compressor
Waves R4 EQ <<< although this i use mainly for cleaning sounds, otherwise i normally just use stock EQs
TC Native Reverb
Ohmforce plugins all day long <<< if you want to make jawbreaker style drums the secret lies here

Synthwise just the Native Instruments FM7
Absynth
Vanguard
to be honest these dont get used too much

most of the work is sample based, used to use Halion as my main sampler but since using Ableton have been using the package Sampler and Impulse which are really good.

to be honest it all depends on the tracks overall vibe, but i do think less is more
some people just feel to chuck so much into a track that all space is lost.
but if your layering sounds to build a particular unique sound then as many as it takes

do you layer drum parts on top of each other or just try to find one really good sample and work on that
I do layer my drums, (lol if you saw the drum tracks to murkage and jawbreaker)
I must confess I rarely tune my drums together though, if they work together i just roll with it, if not i just move on...
But no i never use just one sample

but i never really made much r'n'b... but i do make shitloads of hip hop Slayer

Hey Lethal, nice to have a chance to ask you some questions!

1.) how did you came to that Jawbreaker drums ? Just a messin around or did you have particular idea ?

2.) kicks... sidechain or filter them ?

2.) what do you use for tweaky techno bleeps ?  Bad Teeth

thx a lot... and btw that "Fuck you" tune is absolutly OF THE FUCKING HOOK  Slayer Slayer Slayer

Whats the magic 250hz cut I've been hearing about?
lol youve started it now...

this i think is one of the best things i was ever taught (thanks mark!)
250hz =  the devils frequency... guaranteed to kill your bottom end in your mix and an all round nasty frequency, boost it and try for yourself... and if it sounds good after you boosted it then you need new speakers!
I personally cut it on bass religiously, always cut it on vocals as well... if you find you have a vocal booming too much in the mix drop 250hz and it will probably fix what the compressor just made worse... unless the vocal was poorly recorded in the first place, even then though it can seriously help matters.
if your cleaning sounds, cut 250hz and whatever else necessary... but always cut never boost... test the frequencies with a high Q and move up and down till you get the required effect...

Generally on the subject of EQ'ing I personally avoid boosting wherever I can, unless Im after changing the sound. Much more effective to cut, as boosting just adds harmonics.
and also people, just because your bass is a sub, dont be afraid to roll off the low frequencies, it can dramatically affect your mix and you wont lose power in your bottom end if you do it right.

Best bit of kit i own and one I forgot to mention is my Behringer Ultracurve, which does loads of things but I use it purely to monitor the EQ shape of my mix. This is my essential bit of kit and what I now couldnt live without. But I recommend anyone serious about producing should have an accurate Real Time Analyser for their overall mix frequencies.
I also have a Box which monitors the stereo field, which is also very handy.

Hey Lethal, nice to have a chance to ask you some questions!
1.) how did you came to that Jawbreaker drums ? Just a messin around or did you have particular idea ?
Me n Khan just made a main drum pattern, then processed it in wavelab with various different effects, we then started experimenting with it and Jawbreaker was born... we didnt plan it, it wrote itself.

2.) kicks... sidechain or filter them ?
In what context do you mean to filter them.
sidechaining i only use if im after that particular sucking effect, east end thug being an example. But generally I dont tend to use sidechaining.
Normally i will just EQ my kicks, normally rolling off between 80-100hz depending on the kick sound, and occasionally boosting the top end if I want a bit more whack to the kick. If the kicks been distorted then it will get the 250hz cut as well.

2.) what do you use for tweaky techno bleeps ?  Bad Teeth
well the jawbreaker (and murkage) bleeps were a combination of pitched up samples, layered up with some freebie vst synth (cant remember the name) but they were all processed with the Antares Autofilter as an auxiliary to bring them all together.
I think the thing to be aware of is the effect of pitching a sample up and pitching a synth... pitching a sample not only changes the pitch but the speed and length as well, whereas a synth will just change the pitch.

thx a lot... and btw that "Fuck you" tune is absolutly OF THE FUCKING HOOK  Slayer Slayer Slayer
thanks man glad u like

So in general do you do your layering then resample the new break and processes as a whole, then slice the whole thing? or do you usually have all your layers in the project,

haha

Basically what im trying to ask is do you make a break with layers then just reasample and arrange it within one audio track

or..
do you build the break/layers inside the project? so they are on diferent audio tracks when you get to the mixdown
