hey guys. the kings of the warehouse is on the way, i really think this ep is quite a milestone, certainly highly anticipated for me as a connoisseur of drum and bass and techno.

a few questions for you both:

1. how much do you think you're schooling and work in pro studios helped your production today?

2. as minimal techno really began emerging, i could have never foreseen how much of an impact it made on the techno scene as a whole. i quite enjoy both, but for peak hour stuff i'm still drawn to faster/more driving sounds. how has minimal techno influenced the both of you over the years?

3. great production begins with quality samples...can you recommend any sample cds or packs you both enjoy? (doesn't have to be specific, can be manufacturer recommendations)

4. what do you most want to hear from new producers? and a follow up, when you think back to before you both had your first releases what were your biggest production challenges?

thanks alot for taking the time, and although i may not catch you guys live in the US very soon, i look forward to hearing what's in store...

When it comes to kicks do you prefer samples or drum emulators
Coming from techno what is the best way to start producing technoid material
What bpm are we aiming for.
Do you see people accepting the bridge between the two?

I once read that you guys are starting a revolution with this collab. The combined live shows will probably become insane, but what can be expected as to creativity and evolution in the techno-dnb genre? Any concrete plans?

And will you guys be making remixes of offkey tracks?

Raiden: Which drum break were you using (layering) in tracks like Machine Soul, Chernobyl 4, and others from that era, the break with those extra 'thrashy' sounds on/around the 3rd and 4th snare, Propaganda also used it in a lot of tracks. It has such a nice and defining sound, I hope you know what I am referring to..... I want to make love to it, marry it and have many babies. Bad Teeth

And then a more simple straightforward question; A proper techno kick. How? Wink

What is an essential element when making a track oldskool rave-like? As in working class heroes, sputnik and vietnam never happened(I find it ravy)?

hey! u still answering?  Bad Teeth

got a kinda global question here.

do you use vst samplers via midi or u put every single sample hit into audio channel of your favorite music production software? or maybe u use hardware samplers?

overall.. what do you think is minimum hw/sw setup for producing quality dnb music
...

Quote
I honestly think DnB is ten years behind Techno

i don't agree with this one  Bad Teeth i have listened to lots of techno and compared to dnb, most of techno music sounds unmelodical and 'over-an-over-recycled'! BUT I WOULD like to hear some techno producers remix offkey stuff... like chernobyl 4 for example Smiley

one more! Smiley
whats your opinion on mixing via gramophones or other 'beatmatching lost tilme' methods vs. 'computer perfect sync' software?? Seems to me like any person close to producer can be a 'good' dj.....

sorry for bad english

1. how much do you think you're schooling and work in pro studios helped your production today?

For sure it helps in some areas but when you are working on really filthy lines and mashing sounds up you can find that you have to brake all the rules that you know to make it work …

2. as minimal techno really began emerging, i could have never foreseen how much of an impact it made on the techno scene as a whole. i quite enjoy both, but for peak hour stuff i'm still drawn to faster/more driving sounds. how has minimal techno influenced the both of you over the years?

(Dean)
Im not that keen on minimal if im honest its doesn’t move me anyway .. Its ok in the background at a bar or at home when I want to sleep.. And as the scene moves forward it starts to sound less minimal and more like old techno which is nice hehe

(Chris)
I quite like minimal as long as its interesting and has a vibe, I'm more a fan of the earily ninties detriot stuff. Minimal and trippy :-) Alot of the newer minimal stuff is abit pinkly plonk for me.

3. great production begins with quality samples...can you recommend any sample cds or packs you both enjoy? (doesn't have to be specific, can be manufacturer recommendations)

Hollywood edge are always great, always try to source something alittle obscure, and leftfield. Although alot of techno style productions comes down to good programing as much if not more than your sample choices.

4. what do you most want to hear from new producers? and a follow up, when you think back to before you both had your first releases what were your biggest production challenges?

For me its about originality more than production because production can be worked on.Many demo’s come in that sound to much like they are trying to sound like another producer, but once in the while something comes in that blows you away. I think you look for something that can influence you, like an artist that you can be a fan of.

When we were sending out demos it was much harder, there was no interent just going up to artists in clubs and handing out cds etc. I must have given out 1000's of cd in my the time, thats alot of beer matts. Less new artists appeared back then too so when a label signed you it was really the start of something big, its not so much like this nowadays.

For kick drums I've always use samples, but Im constantly tuning and reprocessing them so I have a kick for every task. Drum Emulators rarely sound good, because in dnb the foundaton is live drums. But thats slowly starting to change.

Personally I like to produce at about 168-172bpm. As for a start point its much the same as techno in getting that catchy, interesting rhythm, and create a famework. I work in the live view within Abelton and jam every possibilty and record the session to catch the vibe, then get nerdy. This way I feel more like a musicain and less a white coat producer, its alot more fun this way.  I tend to leave the bass last because if the tune is already rocking a great bass just tops it off.

Im not sure if its being accepted as such in dnb, it seems to be carving out its own niche' as the Drum and Bass lot dont really care for it, wierdly enough theres more ppl from techno coming over to this sound. The way I see it is there alot of ppl that like a certain vibe regardless of the genre, Ive noticed alot of that on this board. I do think we have got to a point where its moving away from the rules of techno and dnb into its own sound.

Its much the same philosophy as creating basslines. its all but layering, processing, effecting the different layers and experimenting. Mess around with things like delays, reverbs, distortion and resonators then get creative with them.
